The Rich Soil

July 17th, 2023|0 Comments

In the Gospel, Jesus shares with us the parable of the sower. He talks about the different soils that receive the Word of God. Jesus suggests that we are the soil. Are we the soil that is the path where the word is  not received, not believed? Are we the soil that is the rocky ground? We hear the word, but some tribulation comes along, and we are immediately thrown into bitterness. Are we the soil with thorns where we become focused on the riches of the world that chokes us? But then there is the rich soil where the [...]

Fear

“You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be. And one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid… You refuse to do it because you want to live long… You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you’re afraid that somebody will stab you, or shoot at you or bomb your house; so you refuse [...]

What have you received without cost?

June 18th, 2023|0 Comments

Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. What have you received without cost? You may have heard me talk about the zero attribution error. That is the thought that your current wellbeing  is purely attributed to you. I think that a lot of rich people fall for this fallacy. They believe that they have earned their place in life. It’s helpful to recount all the things that have made you you that had nothing to do with you. Let’s start with the greatest gift, life. It is astounding to realize that you need not exist. It [...]

Pope St. John Paul the Great, Next Sunday wear Red for Pentecost, St. George Accessibility, and Our New Mission!

May 12th, 2018|0 Comments

Dear Parishioners, Pope St. John Paul the Great is our new patron who says to us, “It is Jesus you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else satisfies you. He is the beauty to which you are so attracted. It is He who provokes you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is [...]

Excerpt form April 29 “From the Pastor”

April 28th, 2018|0 Comments

Archbishop Carlson has indicated his intention to merge the parishes of St. Dominic Savio and St. George. Remember how the Catholic Church in St. Louis expanded exponentially after World War II when the population moved out of the city of St. Louis into those communities just beyond the city limits. Affton was one such community. Trudy Seise shared with me an old article from the St. Louis Review that she has kept close at hand for many years. It listed the parishes that were created out of Assumption Parish (1839) on Mattese Rd. They include: St. Andrew, St. Paul, St. [...]

The Merger has been Unanimously Approved!

April 21st, 2018|0 Comments

Dear Parishioners, Since our last parish gathering with Msgr. Stehly in January, the plan to merge the parishes of St. Dominic Savio and St. George has been in the hands of Archbishop Carlson.  He has prayerfully discerned the merits of the plan with several groups: The deans of each deanery in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the Archdiocesan Finance Committee, and the Priests’ Council.  In each case, the groups voted unanimously in favor of the plan. Before giving his final approval to this merger of parishes, Archbishop Carlson has asked us one last thing: to recommend a new name for the [...]
