In the Trinity, we are given a powerful image of what our life is to be about. First of all, we are created in the image of God and what is that image of God, but a community of three persons. Our identity lies in relationship. We really are no one without relationship. Our mere existence has its basis not in ourselves but in God. Someone is always with us. The Trinity models what that community is to be, a total outpouring of oneself into the other, a circular loop of three persons. In the image of the Trinity we are to pour ourselves into community. It’s scary to trust, but in that circular loop God promises that life will be poured back into us. That self-emptying love is called kenotic love.

This is why racism is such a problem. Racism is a severing of that love and it not only harms our brothers and sisters, but it harms us. Harboring racism is an act of anti-Catholicism. After all, the word Catholicism itself literally means universal. I don’t condone the violence that has happened and the people who have been hurt. This has been a tragedy and I am concerned for the safety of our police. At the same time, let us work to end inequality and have compassion for our brothers and sisters. We all have our prejudices. Let us work to remove them.

God bless,

Fr. Chris
